ARESTIN® was selected, for the 5th year in a row by dentists and the 4th year in a row by hygienists, in their respected 2008 Townie Choice Awards as the leading locally administered antibiotic for treating periodontal disease. ARESTIN® secured 87% of the votes from practicing clinicians as the complement to scaling and root planing (SRP) procedures, and was featured in the December 2008 "Special Edition" issues of Dentaltown and Hygienetown.

OraPharma, Inc. launches a professional awareness campaign to reflect that thousands of oral health professionals have adopted comprehensive periodontal therapy including ARESTIN® plus scaling and root planing (SRP) as part of their personal standard of care for the treatment of periodontal disease. A study published in the Journal of Periodontology shows that a combination of ARESTIN® plus scaling and root planing (SRP) is significantly more effective than SRP alone in controlling periodontal disease. Study results indicate clearly that when ARESTIN® is placed at the time of initial SRP, clinical markers of disease are reduced, such as pocket depth, inflammation, and bleeding on probing, thus creating an environment where healing has occurred.

Researchers may be one step closer to establishing a link between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD)—the number one cause of death worldwide. According to a study unveiled in the New England Journal of Medicine, periodontal disease contributes to blood vessel dysfunction, which was improved by an intensive regimen of periodontal treatment.
