Patient Communication Tips
Talking with patients about: Periodontist's Diagnosis

It is important to talk with your ARESTIN® Rx Access patients about their periodontitis diagnosis, their treatment plan options, and the ARESTIN® Rx Access program.

Talking with ARESTIN® Rx Patients...about their periodontitis diagnosis

Patients often know little about periodontal disease before they’re diagnosed. And they
may not grasp the importance of prompt comprehensive treatment. In fact, more than
50% of patients admit they would delay periodontal treatment if they were uncertain
about affordability.1

The bottom line?

Addressing financial barriers when possible and making sure patients are well-informed about periodontitis can help you deliver comprehensive treatment to more patients who need it.

Important points to communicate during a patient's initial diagnostic visit:

  1. Periodontal disease is a serious bacterial infection that may often require treatment
with a locally applied antibiotic such as ARESTIN®.
    • Can cause tissue damage/bone loss
    • Can spread to healthy sites in their mouth
    • May require treatment with scaling and root planing and an antibiotic just like
      any other bacterial infection
    • Periodontal treatment is especially important if they have other risk factors such as
      smoking, diabetes, family history
  2. Returning for treatment is important! Discuss whether additional payment arrangements
can be made available for patients without prescription coverage for ARESTIN®.

  3. The next appointment—to begin SRP + ARESTIN® treatment—should be scheduled before
    patient leaves the office.

Talking with ARESTIN® Rx Patients...about their treatment plan options

Option 1: prescription benefits will pay for ARESTIN®

SRP + Full-mouth treatment with ARESTIN®
Patient out-of-pocket costs = Prescription co-pay

TIP! Be specific about estimating all out-of-pocket costs for patients upfront, so they
aren't surprised by unexpected fees.

Option 2: prescription benefits will NOT pay for ARESTIN®

First Step--> Make sure patient understands need for treatment regardless of coverage

  • Infection will spread
  • Greater risk for more expensive surgery

Second Step--> Help patient address financial barriers to treatment

  • Installment-payment plan for full-mouth treatment
    (if available through your practice)
  • Staged treatment approach (spreading SRP and ARESTIN® treatment over a
number of visits as you see fit...to spread out cost to patient)

TIP! It's helpful to discuss treatment options with patients during their initial diagnostic
visit to set expectations in advance.

Talking with ARESTIN® Rx Patients...about the program process

Patients are generally thrilled to learn their health insurance may cover ARESTIN® and that
your office will find out for them.

Here's what to tell patients about their role in the process:
(This information is also available in a patient brochure you can download here)

If ARESTIN® is covered by your health insurance prescription benefits:

  1. A CVS.com representative will call them within the next 3 business days to fill their
    prescription.

It's important to take or return this call promptly, so CVS.com can fill prescription
in time for next dental visit!

  2. The CVS.com representative will collect co-pay for ARESTIN® over the phone via a
    credit or debit card.
  3. Once co-pay is received, CVS.com ships the ARESTIN® to the dental office in time
    for patient's next visit.

If ARESTIN® is NOT covered by your prescription insurance:

Your office telephones the patient directly to review the treatment plan and confirm the
next appointment.

ARESTIN® is indicated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) procedures for reduction of pocket depth in patients with adult periodontitis. ARESTIN® may be used as part of a periodontal maintenance program, which includes good oral hygiene and SRP.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

ARESTIN® should not be used in any patient who has a known sensitivity to minocycline or tetracyclines. The use of drugs of the tetracycline class during tooth development may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth, and therefore should not be used in children or in pregnant or nursing women. Hypersensitivity reactions that included, but were not limited to, anaphylaxis, angioneurotic edema, urticaria, rash, swelling of the face and pruritus have been reported with the use of ARESTIN®. In clinical trials, the most frequently reported nondental treatment-emergent adverse events were headache, infection, flu syndrome and pain.
